Artificial intelligence companies are on the hunt for a new breed of software developer, capable of coding as well as communicating directly with customers to tailor AI solutions to real-world problems.

According to research from the Financial Times, firms like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Cohere are rapidly expanding teams of “forward-deployed engineers” (FDEs) as they seek to drive adoption of their AI models across industries.

Coding to collaboration

The role was initially popularized by data intelligence company Palantir, and aims to combine technical expertise with customer engagement. FDEs are embedded within client organizations to help them integrate AI tools, identify business challenges, and co-develop solutions that deliver measurable results.

Palantir’s Nic Prettejohn described the approach as “product discovery from the inside,” emphasizing that valuable software “is only valuable if it means something for the end customer.”

OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, established its own FDE team at the start of 2024 and plans to expand it to roughly 50 engineers by 2025, said Arnaud Fournier, head of the company’s FDE operations in Europe and the Middle East.

Anthropic, maker of the AI assistant Claude, intends to grow its applied AI team fivefold this year to meet surging client demand, which includes FDEs and product engineers.

Surging demand for FDEs

Job listings for these customer-facing AI roles have increased, as data from Indeed shows that postings for FDE positions rose by more than 800 percent between January and September 2025.

After all, many businesses across various sectors are eager to adopt AI tools, but often lack the expertise to implement them effectively.

The impact of this model is already being realized. OpenAI deployed FDEs to customize tools for agricultural giant John Deere, resulting in precision farming systems that helped reduce chemical spraying by up to 70%.

Such successes demonstrate the strategic importance of combining human insight with cutting-edge AI, and reflect the growing importance of this role in commercializing AI technology.

Building durable relationships

Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez said embedding engineers early in client engagements ensures that “customers get exactly what they need and scale back once companies are up and running.”

This approach helps build long-lasting partnerships and ensures that AI solutions continue to evolve in tandem with customer needs.

As AI continues to move from the lab to the factory floor, the rise of forward-deployed engineers points to a shift toward practical, user-driven innovation and a hot new career path in tech.

Amazon and OpenAI have revealed a $38 billion partnership, which shows the sector’s appetite for compute keeps growing as companies sprint toward artificial general intelligence.
