Google launched a new Video Remix feature in Google Photos that uses its Gemini Omni AI model to transform regular video clips into stylized, shareable creations within seconds.
The tool is designed for people who want to improve their videos without having to learn complex editing software. Instead of manually adjusting effects, users can choose from AI-powered templates that automatically apply changes such as background replacements, lighting improvements, and artistic styles.
“Creating beautiful video clips shouldn’t require professional skills or hours of editing,” Google announced. “Now, with Video Remix in Google Photos, you can transform ordinary videos into share-worthy moments in just a few taps.”
Video Remix is available through the Create tab in Google Photos, which serves as the app’s central hub for creative tools.
What Video Remix can do
The new feature, according to Google, lets users apply several AI-based transformations to existing videos. These include swapping out backgrounds, adding cinematic lighting effects, and applying visual treatments such as watercolor, raw sketchbook, and oil painting styles.
The feature is powered by Gemini Omni, Google’s AI model designed to handle diverse inputs and generate creative outputs. The company says Video Remix can process these changes using ready-made templates, allowing casual users to create edited videos without traditional editing tools.
Google pushes deeper into paid AI features
Video Remix is part of Google’s wider effort to bring generative AI features into consumer products while encouraging users to subscribe to its paid AI plans.
The feature is rolling out to eligible subscribers of Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra plans in selected markets, including the United States, India, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and several other countries.
The launch also puts Google in a growing competition with companies adding AI-powered creative tools to their own platforms. Apple, OpenAI, Adobe, Meta, and others are investing heavily in AI image and video creation features as they compete for users and paid subscriptions.
What this means for users and creators
For casual users, Video Remix could make it easier to turn forgotten clips stored in Google Photos into content worth sharing. Many people have thousands of photos and videos sitting untouched because editing them requires time and technical skills.
By automating creative decisions, Google is lowering the barrier for personal video creation. Families, travelers, and social media users may find it easier to create polished clips without using separate editing apps.
However, the feature also comes with tradeoffs. Because the most advanced editing requires paid AI plans, many Google Photos users will not have access unless they subscribe. AI-generated edits may also raise questions about how accurately original moments are represented, especially when backgrounds, lighting, or artistic effects significantly change a recording.
