Meta’s Muse Image Brings AI Photo Creation Into Instagram, WhatsApp

Meta brings its first Superintelligence Labs image model to millions of users across its apps.

The company launched Muse Image, a new AI image-generation model designed to help users create and edit visuals across the company’s apps. The model is the first image generator developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs and is now available through Meta AI, with support coming to more Meta platforms.

The launch expands Meta’s push to make generative AI a part of everyday social experiences rather than a standalone creative tool. Muse Image can generate images from text prompts, transform existing photos, combine multiple images, and edit images directly with sketches or annotations.

According to Meta, the model works alongside Muse Spark, its reasoning-focused AI model, allowing it to break down prompts before generating images. The company said this helps Muse Image handle more complicated requests, such as combining multiple visual references or creating images with specific layouts and text.

More AI creativity arrives on Instagram and WhatsApp

Muse Image is already powering new creative features across Meta’s platforms. The model supports more than 30 AI-powered effects for Instagram Stories and enables image generation inside Meta AI chats on WhatsApp, initially in select markets.

Users can start with suggested prompts, known as presets, to create ideas such as restoring old photos, experimenting with new hairstyles, or transforming themselves into different artistic styles.

The tool also allows users to redesign rooms by uploading a picture and asking Meta AI to suggest changes using products from the web or Facebook Marketplace. Meta said Muse Image will later expand to Facebook, Messenger, additional Instagram and WhatsApp experiences, and advertising tools through Meta Advantage+ creative.

Instagram photo tagging raises privacy questions

One of Muse Image’s most notable features is also its most controversial due to privacy concerns. Users can @ mention Instagram accounts in prompts, allowing Meta AI to use public photos from those accounts when creating new images. Meta assured users have control over whether their content can be used for AI creation.

TechCrunch reported that users raised concerns about people appearing in AI-generated images without explicit permission. One social media user described the feature as “a privacy landmine waiting to detonate.”

The issue highlights a broader challenge facing AI image companies: balancing creative freedom with consent, ownership, and control over personal images.

Meta sees advertisers as a major opportunity

Beyond consumer creativity, Muse Image is also part of Meta’s effort to bring AI deeper into advertising. The company plans to offer the technology through Advantage+ Creative, allowing businesses to generate more versions of marketing visuals.

Meta said Muse Image can help advertisers adjust creative elements, change styles, and produce variations of existing campaigns. The move reflects a broader shift in digital advertising, where companies are using AI to produce more content while reducing the time and cost of campaign production.

Meta’s AI challenge is no longer just building models

Muse Image reflects Meta’s strategy of embedding AI into the products billions of people already use. Instead of asking users to open a separate image-generation service, Meta is placing creation tools directly inside social networks, messaging apps, and advertising platforms.

The technological advantage will depend not only on producing impressive images but also on Meta’s ability to manage privacy controls, content moderation, and trust at scale across its platforms.

For creators and advertisers, Muse Image could reduce the time needed to produce visuals and experiment with ideas. For everyday users, it offers easier ways to edit and personalize photos. But the tradeoff is that more powerful AI tools require stronger safeguards around how personal content is used.

Meta said Muse Image is free for everyday creation, while users who want additional capabilities can access them through subscription plans.
