Grid computing—the harnessing of computers to better employ underutilized computing resources and/or to improve scalability and availability—is gaining popularity, particularly with Oracle Corp.s push of its new 10g grid technology. But many grid setups are being built on top of legacy components that can make securing the grid setup more difficult, warned Dan Kusnetzky, IDC vice president of system software, at the Directions 2004—making IT Matter conference last week in Boston.
