IT managers responsible for looking after the health and availability of their corporate data are getting access to tools from BMC Software Inc. and its partners Sybase Inc. and Veritas Software Corp.

With the goal of getting crashed databases up and running quicker and more reliably, Houston-based BMC last week announced that it has integrated its database backup and recovery product, SQL- BackTrack, with Veritas NetBackup backup tool.

The integration will allow customers to integrate database backup that is achieved through SQL-BackTrack with the devices and media support provided by NetBackup, according to officials from BMC and Veritas, of Mountain View, Calif.

Separately last week, Sybase released a performance monitoring tool for ASE (Adaptive Server Enterprise) 12.5.0.3, the Dublin, Calif., companys enterprise-class relational DBMS.

ASE Performance Monitoring Option-BMC DBXray for Sybase was developed by BMC. It is designed to simplify database management through a performance dashboard that allows database administrators to monitor the health of an overall system; it also enables them to anticipate and solve potential problems, as well as get a 24-hour view of activity for database performance optimization.

      • Sybase releases BMC DBXray for Sybase, a tool that enables administrators to monitor an ASE database from a browser

BMC DBXray for Sybase provides monitoring capabilities from any PC with a common Internet browser, Sybase officials said. In addition to providing a graphical snapshot of overall database health, it identifies and eliminates potential server-resource and other problems that could affect performance and availability. When activities fall outside user-defined thresholds, the monitor alerts DBAs to the potential problem.

Alerts are archived for 14 days so that recurring performance issues can be identified.

To help DBAs avoid bottlenecks, DBXray also provides information on disk subsystem and RAID configurations.

The tools 24-hour view of system activities allows DBAs to determine peak activity periods and schedule resource-intensive tasks during off-peak hours.
