Enterprises running multiple databases will soon have new and enhanced administration tools from BMC Software Inc., XOsoft Inc. and Storage Technology Corp. to consider.
The vendors said they are readying wares that will help ensure that streamlined and centrally managed backup and disaster recovery safeguards are in place.
Houston-based BMC next week plans to release SmartDBA Recovery Management 5.0, which adds policy-compliance reporting capabilities and centralized management functions to the suite. The softwares new Web-based GUI lets database administrators group databases by specific business application to help them better predict and track the best times to conduct backups, the duration of backup or recovery, and which systems and data will be affected during the backup window, officials said.
Augmented policy tracking in SmartDBA Recovery Management 5.0 is designed to let users fine-tune the recovery of single rows and columns within a database, as opposed to an entire environment.
Beta testers such as Vince Pulice said the boosted policy components should improve database availability and reduce the time and dollars spent on orchestrating backup and recovery.
“Youre risking all the data of the corporation if you dont have those sets of policies in place to ensure you have good recovery and backup,” said Pulice, manager of database administration at Boise Cascade Corp., in Boise, Idaho. “At the [remote] locations, we dont have the DBA expertise that we have here in [the headquarters], so we would save time and money by eliminating management issues at the locations” using SmartDBA Recovery Management.
XOsoft next month plans to release DataRewinder 2.0, which enables users to capture changes to database files and automatically reconstitute the data in reverse order to a point before it was corrupted or lost. The product features integration with Veritas Software Corp.s NetBackup platform and supports Microsoft Corp.s SQL Server and Exchange, as well as Oracle Corp. databases, said officials in Burlington, Mass.
StorageTek, of Louisville, Colo., next week will unveil its Lifecycle Director for DB2 archive solution. Due at the end of next month, the software lets administrators running IBMs DB2 database in OS/390 or z/OS server environments automate the transparent data movement to lower-cost storage media while permitting rapid access to archived data, officials said.
