Backbase, a maker of Asynchronous JavaScript and XML technology, has announced a new project with BEA Systems to integrate its Backbase AJAX technology with BEAs Workshop Studio.
Backbase, headquartered in Amsterdam, with North American headquarters in San Mateo, Calif., is working to integrate its AJAX framework with San Jose, Calif.-based BEAs Workshop Studio to try to help Java developers leverage the Eclipse open-source development system for visual AJAX development, the companies said. The integration will better enable developers to create enterprise rich Internet applications, they said.
In a company blog post on Sept. 22, Backbase said: “The integration will enable WYSIWYG development of AJAX applications using JavaServer Faces.”

Moreover, describing the impetus for the project, the blog post read: “Up to now, most AJAX development takes place on the command line. With AJAX becoming more mature, we notice an increasing demand for visual development of AJAX apps. We considered creating a development tool within the Web browser, but realized that most developers prefer to work from within their IDE. In the Java world, this is usually Eclipse. BEA Workshop for JSF adds JSF-specific functionality to Eclipse, and we simply add some Backbase-specific functionality on top of it.”
In a statement, Bill Roth, vice president of the BEA Workshop Business Unit, said, “The Backbase integration with BEA Workshop embodies the type of development environment customers are looking for when creating enterprise AJAX applications.”
Also in a statement, Jouk Pleiter, co-founder and CEO of Backbase, said: “Large and midsized enterprises want to use AJAX to create Rich Internet Applications, but only if a scalable and secure AJAX solution is available that fits well with existing enterprise systems. With Backbase AJAX software, BEA customers can upgrade their enterprise Java applications with mature AJAX functionality.”
