Enterprise resource planning software maker Lawson Software Inc. announced Tuesday an agreement with e-Business platform provider IONA Technologies PLC that will enable Lawson to develop software using IONAs platform.

Specifically, the agreement gives Lawson the right to use IONAs Orbix E2A Platform products to develop Lawson retail software, which includes Lawson Merchandising—and then to market those products.

Orbix E2A consists of the namesake E2A Web services Integration Platform and E2A Application Server Platform, and facilitates the flow of information across disparate systems, officials said.

Lawsons retail software, Merchandising, is a category management and merchandising solution.

At the same time, Lawsons retail software provides financial information and analysis, manages inventory flow and the employee hire to retire management process.

Lawson, based in St. Paul, Minn., sells its ERP and e-business software primarily to the mid-market.

Competitor J.D. Edwards & Co., of Denver, signed a similar agreement with IBM last month that will enable it to embed IBMs WebSphere middleware software into its JDE 5 applications.

The JDE OEM agreement with IBM will provide JDE users with integration technologies that include IBMs WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere Portal, DB2 Universal Database and security features.

IONA is based in Dublin, Ireland.
