Retailer Best Buy warned late Wednesday night of a hoax that poses as an email from the company, attempting to convince customers to divulge their personal financial information.
The email, which bears the heading “Fraud Alert”, claims to come from the Best Buy fraud department, the retailer said. The email asks users for their Social Security number and credit card information.
Obviously, the message did not originate from Best Buy, the store said. Customers who responded to the email are encouraged to call their financial institutions and credit card companies.
Best Buy said to the companys knowledge none of its systems had been hacked and that its online business remains secure. Previously, customers had been able to decipher credit card information from wireless transmissions emanating from point-of-sale terminals Best Buy had used inside the store.
Customers can check the status of their online orders by calling 1-888-BEST-BUY, the store said.
