BEA Systems Inc. on Tuesday will unveil a lower-cost version of its development tools for deploying small-scale Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) applications for its flagship WebLogic application server.

WebLogic Workshop Professional Edition, which will be priced at $995, includes all of the capability of BEAs WebLogic Platform 8.1, with an application server, portal, application development framework and integration software. But the new softwares deployment license is limited to five IP connections, which covers about five to 15 users, according to BEA officials.

WebLogic Platform 8.1, for $90,000, offers unlimited connections. BEA also offers WebLogic Platform Workgroup Edition, which allows 20 IP connections, for $4,000, and a free version of WebLogic Workshop for noncommercial deployments.

With the new software, BEA says developers can build Web applications, business workflows, Enterprise Java Beans, portals and Web services using one interface.

“We need to make it a lot easier for developers to write [J2EE applications] to be competitive with Microsofts .Net,” said BEA spokesperson Cornelius Willis in San Jose, Calif. “We need to make it easy, inexpensive for developers to get their hands on.”

Developers can obtain the new suite, available Wednesday, through BEA resellers Programmers Paradise and Component Source programs or through BEAs developer Web site.
