While XML, SOA and Asynchronous JavaScript and XML generate the buzz, oldies but goodies such as CORBA on Unix arent going to disappear any time soon.
“Inside the enterprise we are still seeing a slow adoption of Web services and XML technologies, which will inhibit the uptake of Web 2.0 for real, mission-critical applications,” said Eric Newcomer, chief technology officer of Iona Technologies.
Why not modernize? “Older systems often represent significant investments, and its often difficult, if not impossible, to justify the cost of rewriting older applications, since a technical refresh by itself may not add business value,” said Newcomer in Waltham, Mass.
Simplicity will also help adoption, said Jody Kerr, systems architect at Wells Fargo.
If corporations standardize their systems, it will be easier to move into SOA (service-oriented architecture).
“The core functionality doesnt change very much, but if you keep your stuff simple, it works better,” said Kerr in San Francisco.
Until then, enterprises may stick with the old favorites.
“Newer software typically doesnt have equivalent reliability, performance or quality-of-service capabilities,” said Newcomer.
