San Jose, San Francisco, New York Top Cities for IT Salaries

Well-known technology hubs, such as San Jose, Calif., as well as San Francisco and New York’s silicon alley rank highest in pay, versus smaller cities such as Phoenix, St. Louis and Tampa, Fla., according to CyberCoders, a worldwide recruiting firm. The study, which reveals which cities pay the highest average salary for technology jobs, ranked San Jose first overall, followed by New York, Boston and Los Angeles. Rounding out the top ten was Dallas.

The company analyzed more than 3,000 technical job titles from around the nation to determine the highest-paying cities for technology jobs and found the average salary in San Jose was $119,412. Following were San Francisco, at $112,739; New York, at $105,192; and Washington, D.C., at $99,618. Boston placed fifth with an average IT salary of $99,099, followed by Los Angeles, with an average salary of $96,705. The New York City borough of Brooklyn placed seventh, with $96,696. Philadelphia was next, with average pay of $95,929. Then came Chicago, at $94,899, and finally Dallas, at $94,799.

“This year, we see an increase in salary in positions surrounding mobile development,” said Matt Miller, chief technology officer of CyberCoders. “Some of the highest-paid candidates are those who have multi-platform skills and can design and code for the fast-paced, ever-changing world of mobile applications.”

CyberCoders research shows the average yearly salary for the same position in various cities differs. For example, a .NET developer in San Francisco makes, on average, $98,750.00 a year. In Los Angeles, a .NET developer’s salary is listed as $86,875 a year.

“The Bay Area continues to dominate when it comes to tech, and companies in the area should expect to pay top dollar for this highly competitive talent pool,” said Miller.

A recent report from IT recruitment specialist Dice found that while there are certainly many available tech jobs in traditional centers like Silicon Valley, New York or Seattle, other cities continue to join the party€”creating possible opportunities for tech professionals in other regions. The fastest-growing cities for tech jobs are as varied as their locations.

Raleigh, N.C., topped Dice€™s list of fastest-growing cities for tech jobs, but Missouri also had two cities on the list. Kansas City-based tech professionals can expect to take home more than $75,000 a year (up 13 percent year-over-year), and job opportunities can be found at financial services and legal firms. In St. Louis, where manufacturing and health care companies are looking for tech talent, yearly tech salaries hover at about $71,000.
