    Surgical Information Systems Acquires AmkaiSolutions

Perioperative information systems specialist Surgical Information Systems (SIS) announced it has acquired AmkaiSolutions, a provider of ambulatory surgery center (ASC) electronic medical record (EMR) and business management software.

The hope is that the addition of AmkaiSolutions will strengthen SIS’ position in the perioperative IT market where it already serves over 300 hospitals and health systems in the U.S. and Canada.

Developed specifically for the complex surgical environment, all SIS solutions—including anesthesia—are architected on a single database and integrate with other hospital systems.

Offering a complete software suite for the ambulatory surgery market, including both an EMR system, called AmkaiCharts and a next-generation administrative management software solution called AmkaiOffice, the company’s systems are currently installed in more than 200 facilities in the U.S.

As ambulatory surgery facilities replace and enhance their legacy administrative solutions and expand into electronic clinical documentation, AmkaiSolutions has seen continued growth over the past few years.

“The combination of these two industry leaders will help meet the changing needs of surgical care delivery and bring together a legacy of technology innovation, surgery, and anesthesia expertise, as well as strong client and partner relationships to the market, Ed Daihl, CEO of SIS, said in a statement. “The merger expands our ability to provide the solutions perioperative leaders need to help meet their safety, efficiency, and financial goals in any surgical environment.”

The acquisition will enable SIS to continue to meet the needs of its current clients and extend its capabilities into the ambulatory surgery market, which includes ASCs, surgical hospitals and their affiliated physician practices. At the same time, AmkaiSolutions will benefit from SIS’ capabilities in product development and client support.

“Meeting the practice and information management needs of the outpatient and acute care environments enable information to be more easily managed and analyzed,” Joe Macies, executive vice president of AmkaiSolutions, said in a statement. “We look forward to combining our strong ambulatory experience with the rich, acute care experience of the SIS team. Together we will advance our ongoing mission to support our clients’ efforts to improve the overall healthcare provided by our clients, enabling them to deliver safe, efficient, cost-effective surgical services.”

In October, the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) announced that, following review, SIS has once again achieved the “Peer Reviewed by HFMA” standard for its SIS Analytics product.

The process provides health care financial managers with an objective third party evaluation of products and services used in the healthcare workplace. The eleven-step process includes a Peer Review panel review comprised of current customers, prospects who have not made a purchase, and industry experts.
