Forty-seven companies—more than half of which are U.S.-based and 19 of which are IT-focused—were awarded status as Technology Pioneers 2007, announced the World Economic Forum, a Geneva-based independent organization that seeks to improve the state of the world, on Dec. 4.

Products from the companies include microscopic pill cameras, bio-sensors that can localize land mines and implantable medical devices for the treatment of brain tumors.

Two hundred twenty-five companies were nominated by venture capital and technology companies, with a panel of technology experts appointed by the World Economic Forum making the final selection of 47.

Nineteen of the companies fall within their category of Information Technology, among them ComScore, a Reston-based provider of digital marketing intelligence; HelloSoft, the San Jose provider of VOIP (voice over IP) technologies for wireline and wireless devices; Mozilla Corporation, creator of the free and open-source Firefox browser and based in Mountain View; and ThinkMagic, the Cambridge, Mass.-based developer of RFID readers and sensors.
