eWEEK Labs Walk-Through: Palm Treo 680

Palm’s Treo 680 is available in Graphite from Cingular and runs on the carrier’s EDGE network. The GSM quadband world phone is also available unlocked for use on any GSM carrier—and in three additional colors—direct from Palm.

The Treo 680, shown here in Arctic, has a 320-by-320, 16-bit TFT (thin-film transistor) color touch-screen. The device has 64MB of user memory and 64MB of synchronous dynamic RAM.

The Treo 680, aimed mainly at the prosumer market, comes with the Pocket Tunes music player and a 30-day free trial to the Yahoo Music service.

The Treo 680, shown here in Copper, is the first U.S. smart phone from Palm with an internal antenna. The device runs Palm’s Palm operating system.

The Treo 680, shown here in Crimson, has a GSM/GPRS/EDGE Class 10 radio (850/900/1800/1900). Users who want 3G capabilities will need to wait for Palm to bring its Treo 750v smart phone, currently available only in Europe, to the United States.

The Treo 680 is available for $199 with a two-year contract from Cingular, which includes an unlimited data plan. The device is available from Palm unlocked and without a contract for $399.

The Treo 680 will support a number of third-party applications including Google Maps. The smart phone also has the ability to handle native PDF documents.
