2Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820
The Lumia 920 features a 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ WGA IPS LCD Super Sensitive touch display—a complicated way of saying it’s extremely crisp and bright and easy to read in direct sunlight. The Lumia 820 features a 4.3-inch ClearBlack OLED WVGA with a resolution of 800 by 480 and also Super Sensitive touch capabilities, so users can check messages without taking off their gloves. 3Nokia Music
On Sept. 4, Nokia introduced the Nokia Music app, a free and advertisement-free streaming music service exclusive to Nokia handsets. It can even help users find local gigs where musicians they like are playing. (Photo by Scott Ferguson)
4JBL Speakers
The new Lumias include near-field communication (NFC) technology, which enables them to pair with new speakers from JBL, which can stream the songs playing on Nokia Music. The phones can also wirelessly dock on top of the speaker, as seen here, for a wireless charge. (Photo by Scott Ferguson)
5Nokia Maps
Nokia also introduced enhancements to Nokia Maps, Nokia Transport and Nokia Drive, which together create an impressive, integrated mapping experience. True maps are also stored on the phone so they can be accessed even when out of range of a signal. (Photo by Scott Ferguson)
6Nokia City Lens
Users can point the camera at a city street, and the City Lens app will overlay the image with information about all that’s seen, from restaurants to bus stops. Users can then click for deeper information, such as for restaurant reviews or images that diners have taken. (Photo by Scott Ferguson)
7Windows Phone 8
Windows Phone 8, Microsoft’s software for the phones, isn’t yet ready, and so the new Lumias won’t begin shipping until later this year, and even then, only in limited quantities. The CNN app, which will flash news updates to the start screen when pinned there, is showing the same news story in this photo taken in the evening, as is did during a demonstration around 10:30 a.m. (Photo by Scott Ferguson)
8The Kin
Motorola, not content with Muzak, warmed up the audience with a performance by The Kin—a good-natured band that very quickly learned that tech journalists have no interest in singing along.
9Eric Schmidt
Google’s Eric Schmidt took the stage next and tried to arouse some awe for how far cell phone technology has come, and how quickly. “They should be called mobile computers, not phones,” he said.
10Dennis Woodside
Next up was Motorola’s new CEO, Dennis Woodside. “The new Motorola starts today,” he told the audience. In August 2011, Google announced it was acquiring Motorola for $12.5 billion.
11Motorola Timeline
One thing that’s not debated in the industry, said Woodside, is that Motorola “invented the technology underpinning the mobile industry.” Motorola technology facilitated Neil Armstrong’s first call from space, as well as the first cell phone call ever made, by a Motorola engineer in New York.
12Android
Woodside emphasized some Android firsts and shared that users do more with faster connections. On a 3G network, research has found users to check their phones 39 times a day, versus 63 times a day on a 4G connection.
13Hands-On
Motorola, Google and Verizon Wireless then invited the audience for a hands-on with the phones, which focus on speed, battery life and display sizes and quality.
14Droid Razr M
The new Droid Razr M and the original Droid Razr, both seen here, feature 4.3-inch displays. With the Razr M, Motorola managed to pair the display with a shorter, narrower device body.
15Droid Razr M
According to Motorola, the Droid Razr M has “almost no border” and 40 percent more screen area than the Apple iPhone 4S. The Razr M is now available to preorder and will go on sale Sept. 13 for $99 with a new Verizon Wireless contract.
16Droid Razr M Plus Kevlar
All three new Droid Razrs run Android 4.0 but will be upgraded to 4.1 by the end of the year, and feature Kevlar fiber on the back with “water-repellent nanocoating.”
17Droid Razr HD
A Motorola executive called the Droid Razr HD, which features a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED HD display, “the most compact big-screen smartphone.” He added that it also has 85 percent more color saturation than the iPhone 4S.
18Droid Razr Maxx HD
The Razr Maxx HD is the Razr HD with a cranked-up battery and 32GB of storage space. It could stream 27 hours of music, 10 hours of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) video or last for 21 hours of talk time.
