Users looking for simpler and speedier restorations of crashed Exchange servers will get their wish from Veritas Software Corp. next week.
In an update to the Veritas Edition for Exchange 1.1 software, called Maintenance Pack 1, the Mountain View, Calif., data management company automated several pages worth of manual steps from a Microsoft snapshot restoration white paper into a new automated utility, explained Matt LaPine, engineering manager.
The new feature, called Hot Snapshots, is based on the existing FlashSnap tool in Veritas Volume Manager software, he said. Recovering crashed e-mails servers is vital, as e-mail is increasingly becoming a mission-critical application and is subject to recent legal requirements.
Since the snapshots come form the users choice of disk technologies instead of slower tapes, snapshot restores can be done in minutes, compared to hours in the past, he said.
However, the upgrade is currently only for Exchange 2000. Exchange 2003 support will come this summer, with a version for Windows Server 2003 debuting early in 2004, officials said.
The current Windows 2000 versions will cost $2,500 for Standard Server and $4,000 for Advanced Server.
Several other storage backup and management companies have also recently announced support for various parts of the new Windows Server 2003.
