EMC Corp. today announced immediate availability of upgrades for its Symmetrix 5.x hardware family, to support features not yet in the newer Symmetrix 6.0, officials said.

The new Z8000, an upgrade to 5.xs standard 8000 version, is specifically for users connecting to mainframes.

The newer and faster 6.0, called DMX, wont have mainframe connectivity with Fibre Connect (FiCon) until the second quarter, officials have said.

Z8000 is compatible with the zOS feature set, and has static and dynamic parallel access volume, 3390/27 emulation, and RAID 10 support. It comes in two models, the Z8530, with 2TB and 3.5TB of usable capacity, and Z8830, with 5TB and 10TB of usable capacity.

The Z8830 version can scale to 27.2TB, and has up to 64GB of cache, officials said. List prices for Z8000 systems start at $258,000, officials said.

EMC, of Hopkinton, Mass., also announced immediate availability of Gigabit Ethernet connections to the standard 5.x 8000 series, and of new 146GB drives.

The new connections let users do IP-based wide-area replication, while the new drives bring the capacity to more than 56TB.
