Small companies continue to offer the best health IT products, according to awards recently given at the 22nd annual Towards the Electronic Patient Record conference in Baltimore.

More than 200 leading vendors of electronic health records and related IT showcased their products at the conference.

Based on a review by an independent panel of more than two dozen judges who are leaders in the health IT field, the top three products were selected in seven categories and given awards during the opening session of the conference.

In spring of 2006, the judges determined the top three products based on a review of applicants.

In May, the finalists presented and demonstrated their solutions in front of a panel of the judges. First, second and third honors were then determined in each category.

Although industry giants like Allscripts and Cerner took some of the top awards for e-prescribing systems and large EMR (electronic medical records) systems, smaller companies like Practice Partner and eClinical Works dominated the competition with their EMR systems for practices of all sizes.
