Analysts are scratching their heads over Micron Electronics plan to turn its HostPro Inc. subsidiary into an application service provider, which would make Micron the first big-time PC maker to become an ASP. IDC analyst Melanie Posey was quoted as saying, “Its not the kind of thing you would set out to do unless youre desperate … Theyre two fundamentally different businesses.”

But what will folks think when Micron announces other diversification plans? Sources say Micron may open a chain of drive-through liquor stores, market a line of “antigravity” wrinkle creams and, cashing in on the buzz created by “That 70s Show,” build a dozen 8-track tape manufacturing plants in South America and New Jersey.
