Microsoft Releases iSCSI Driver Package

Microsoft last week released its iSCSI Software Initiator Version 1.0 for Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, and Windows XP Professional.

The driver supports the following operating systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Windows XP 64-bit.

The Internet Engineering Task Force in February approved the iSCSI specification. The standard is expected to expand the use of storage area networking by mid- and small-sized businesses. The protocol sends native SCSI commands over TCP/IP, allowing the sharing of storage over IP networks. Instead of costly Fibre Channel systems, customers can connect to SANs with inexpensive Gigabit Ethernet networks.
