Data from Aflac's Wellness Matters survey shows that 76% of Gen Z and 63% of millennials turn first to AI and other digital resources for health support before consulting a medical professional. Driven by long appointment waits, scheduling challenges, and rising out-of-pocket costs, many younger adults are turning to digital resources before seeking professional care.
The survey also found that more than 60% of Gen Z and millennials have delayed or skipped routine checkups while turning to AI platforms, medical search engines, and online health content for guidance.
The trend extends beyond younger generations. A March KFF survey found that one in three U.S. adults had used AI for health information. KFF also found that ChatGPT was used by 44% of U.S. adults, while OpenAI says more than 300 million people worldwide turn to ChatGPT each week with health-related questions.
This growing reliance on AI makes the technology's accuracy—and its limitations—increasingly important. While instant answers can be empowering, AI systems can still produce false or outdated information.
When chatbot guidance delays or replaces appropriate medical care, a manageable condition can become far more serious.
From smartwatches to ChatGPT
We are currently witnessing a major shift in consumer health technology. Artificial intelligence is evolving from simple, reactive step-counting algorithms into proactive, continuous health-monitoring systems that live on your wrist and inside your smartphone.
