OpenAI has begun teasing its next major AI model, and early signals suggest it could arrive sooner than many expected.

The company sparked new speculation this week after posting a short message on X stating simply: “5.4 sooner than you Think.” The brief remark has fueled discussion among developers and researchers about what the next upgrade to the GPT-5 series could bring.

While OpenAI has not officially revealed details, several reports and leaks indicate that the upcoming GPT-5.4 model may deliver major improvements in reasoning ability and the amount of information the system can process at once.

Reports point to massive context window expansion

One of the most widely discussed upgrades involves the model’s context window.

According to a report from The Information, GPT-5.4 is expected to support a context window of more than 1 million tokens, more than double the 400,000-token limit in GPT-5.2. If confirmed, the increase would allow the model to handle much larger datasets, long research documents, or even entire codebases in a single session.

Some speculation suggests the limit could go even higher. Dataconomy reported that leaked internal commits suggest the model may reach a two-million-token context window, though that figure has not been verified in OpenAI’s official code.

The expanded capacity would also bring OpenAI in line with rival AI models from Google and Anthropic that already support context windows of around 1 million tokens.

Extreme reasoning mode reportedly in development

Another potential addition attracting attention is a new feature described as an “extreme reasoning” mode.

According to The Information, the feature would allow the model to spend significantly more time and computing power solving complex problems. This approach could enable deeper analysis and more accurate responses for challenging tasks.

However, the trade-off may be slower responses, since the model would take longer to process difficult queries. Sources cited by The Information also say GPT-5.4 is expected to perform better on tasks that run for long periods, sometimes several hours.

The improvements could help the system retain information across multi-step workflows and reduce mistakes during extended operations.

Such capabilities would be particularly useful for AI agents and automation tools. For example, OpenAI’s Codex programming assistant could leverage the additional memory and reasoning power to handle large-scale coding projects or complex debugging tasks.

Reports also suggest the model may improve its ability to track instructions and operational rules throughout lengthy interactions, lowering the chances of errors.

Launch rumors surface amid wider debate around OpenAI

The speculation about GPT-5.4 also comes amid intense debate at the company.

OpenAI has faced criticism following its agreement with the US Department of Defense to provide AI systems for certain Pentagon operations. The announcement triggered discussion within the AI community about the role of AI tools in military environments.

The push to release GPT-5.4 feels like a strategic move to keep users from drifting toward competitors, betting that a major boost in reasoning and overall power will be enough to shore up loyalty.

Some reports indicate ChatGPT uninstalls spiked by nearly 300% over a single weekend as users flocked to rivals like Anthropic’s Claude.
