Dell on Aug. 11 expanded its Vostro line to include the Vostro 1014, 1015 and 1088. Like the rest of the Vostro line, the new notebook PCs are geared toward small business users, in terms of price and how quickly they can start running out of the box.
“Small businesses are a set of customers that have fallen through the cracks,” Kirk Schell, the director of Dell’s Vostro product group, told eWEEK in July, when Dell added the All-In-One desktop to the Vostro lineup. Schell said his group was dedicated to researching what this particular customer segment looks for and needs.
The three laptops are essentially the same; the 1014 is a 14.1-inch notebook, the 1015 is a 15.6-inch version and the 1088 is a version only available in Asia-Pacific countries.
According to Dell, users can expect Intel Core 2 processors, extended battery life, power-efficient WLED LCD screens and Energy Star 5.0 compliance, a 5-in-1 media reader for transferring photos, video and data, and the option of an integrated Webcam. There’s also a choice of a glossy black, blue or cherry red finish.
Past Vostro notebooks have paired Intel Core 2 Duo processors with 4GB of RAM, 5400-rpm hard drives and up to 320GB of storage.
On July 1 Dell introduced the Vostro 1220, a thin-and-light notebook with a starting price of $799 that features an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 8GB of dual-channel 800MHz DDR2 (double data rate 2) SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM) and an Intel GM45 Express chip set.
Some of these laptops are said to be already available in parts of Europe, and were available in the Asia-Pacific region and Japan as of Aug. 11 for a starting price of approximately $421.
