eWEEK Labs Walk-Through: Solaris 10 (6/06 Update)

Solaris 10 6/06s ZFS (Zettabyte File System) administration tool helped us get up and running right away graphically, while showing us, for future reference, the faster, command line-based operations.

Solaris 10s default Java Desktop System graphical environment contains enough applications for the OS to serve as a decent workstation, but its components tend to be less up-to-date than those for desktop-focused Linux distributions.

Suns Management Console came in handy for some tasks, but wed like to see the tool reworked, a la the new ZFS interface, to expose better Solaris 10s functionality to new users.

We were happy to see Solaris 10s network-based update tool. Wed like to see Sun take a page out of the Linux book and add support for installing other Solaris packages this way, as well.
