Nvidia says that its Quadro FX 4800 professional graphics card for Apple Mac Pro users is coming in May.
Nvidia first introduced its new Quadro GPUs March 30. That announcement from Nvidia included three additions to the Quadro NVS family and six additions to the FX line, including the FX 4800.
In addition to that announcement, Apple announced a new Mac Pro in March that uses an Intel Xeon Nehalem processor along with an Nvidia GeForce GT 120 graphics card that has 512MB of GDDR3 (graphics double data rate 3) memory.
The Nvidia Quadro FX 4800 GPU (graphics processing unit) offers what Nvidia calls a substantial boost in graphics performance capabilities for users in markets such as architecture, content creation, science and medicine.
The Nvidia graphics card also dynamically allocates computer, geometry, shading and pixel processing power, and features a 3-pin stereo connector for three-dimensional stereoscopic imagining.
According to Nvidia, additional features for Apple Mac Pro users include:
      – A 1.5GB frame buffer and memory bandwidth up to 76.8 gigabytes per second, to deliver high throughput for interactive visualization of large models, as well as processing large textures and frames and full-scene anti-aliasing.
      – Nvidia’s CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) parallel computing architecture, which improves performance of applications such as those for video, animation and production.
      – Access to Apple Boot Camp and accelerated performance of Microsoft Windows 3D graphics.
The new Quadro FX 4800 GPU for Mac is priced at $1,799 and beginning in May will be available at Apple.com, through Apple resellers and through Nvidia channel partners.
