Apple isnt the only one selling notebooks with 17-inch displays. Today, Toshiba announced its first notebook with a display measuring a full 17-inches across the diagonal: the Satellite P25-S507. Available starting at $2,099, the metallic-blue system also includes a 2.80GHz Pentium 4 processor with hyper-threading technology, 512MB of RAM (expandable to 2048MB), a 60GB hard disk, a built-in DVD-R/RW drive, and a WiFi adapter that supports both the 802.11a and 802.11b protocols.
Like Apples PowerBook G4 with 17-inch display, the Satellite is well equipped for use in the home, and Toshiba says the unit is particularly suited to college students in living in dorm rooms. Indeed, such notebooks have become more and more popular on college campuses of late. According to Mikako Kitagawa, a principal analyst with the Gartner Group, notebook sales have increased significantly during the back to school season each of the last two years, due mainly to purchases for college students.
A WiFi-equipped notebook like the Satellite lets students take advantage of the wireless networks that keep popping up across American campuses. The Campus Computing Project, a Los Angeles firm that tracks technology use in high education, says that over 90 percent of all public universities now run some sort of wireless LAN installed and that over ten percent provide campus-wide wireless access.
