Google’s biggest competitor? Not Microsoft, Amazon, Yahoo or any of the other search startups. The biggest competitor is Wikipedia. Not only do the Wikipedia entries always seem to come up first in the Google search results which makes Wikipedia a very valuable advertising mechanism, the entries make sense. I, along with many other web readers, went to Google to get an update and reasoning behind the steam explosion in New York City. I mean I had ridden on that subway line going under Grand Central only the day before. The wikipedia entry had the A.P. story but also the entire history of steam in NYC. Google gave a list of search results, but Wikipedia answered the when, where and why. This round goes to Jimmy Wales and the Wiki crowd.
