The number of visitors to Google Base, Google’s online classifieds marketplace, has already started to level off just a few months since the feature was introduced, says an Internet traffic monitoring concern.

In a report issued April 4, HitWise said the amount of Internet traffic to Google Base was nearly the same in January as it was in February. Overall, Google Base visitors represent a scant 0.00017 percent of all Internet wanderers.

These numbers have to be disapppointing for Google, which launched Google Base in Novermber and had to be hoping for a much brisker start.

But the HitWise findings are welcome news to online auctioneer eBay, plus Craiglist and other classified listings services that Google Base competes with.
