Barracuda Networks has announced plans to integrate technology from recently acquired Web application security vendor NetContinuum into its product line.
Barracuda acquired NetContinuum for an undisclosed sum in July. NetContinuum develops products that combine Web application security, traffic management and SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) acceleration. The move was meant to broaden the companys security footprint as well as to expand customer adoption of Web application firewalls, Barracuda officials said.
“Barracuda Networks has built a strong reputation for providing very easy-to-use, powerful and affordable appliances, including the Barracuda Web Filter and Barracuda Spam Firewall, for all sizes and types of business,” said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management at Barracuda, headquartered in Campbell, Calif.

“With the NetContinuum acquisition, we believe … it puts the company in a strong position to expand customer adoption of Web Application Firewalls,” he said.
The company decided to trek down this road after launching the Barracuda Load Balancer in 2006. In discussions with customers, the company found many clients complained of security shortcomings in contemporary Web application firewall products. With that in mind, Barracuda has started building on the existing NetContinuum products and plans to increase investment in product development in the Web Application Firewall product category, Pao said.
“The NetContinuum products will eventually be sold as Barracuda Web Application Controllers,” he said, adding the company will maintain support for NetContinuums existing products.
