With its new line of appliances, enKoo takes aim at small businesses that want to capitalize on the flexibility and easy administration of SSL VPN technology without the premium price.

I tested the enKoo-1000, which shipped last month and starts at a rock-bottom $995 for 10 concurrent users.

The enKoo-1000s application support is limited, using Java-based thin clients to access Windows or Samba file shares, e-mail, and an integrated remote desktop application called Beam.

The enKoo-1000 also doesnt authenticate to Active Directory or any other external authentication server, so I had to manually enter all users and groups.

With that step completed, I easily configured the enKoo-1000 to offer different levels of access to files and to the Beam application for our user groups. Remote access then worked as expected from Internet Explorer and Mozilla browsers.

Very small companies looking to provide remote access to files may benefit from the enKoo-1000, but companies that need more application support should look for a more robust product.
