Enrique Salem has officially stepped into the role of chief executive officer of Symantec.

Salem replaces John W. Thompson, who captained the company for the last 10 years as CEO and will stay on as chairman of the board of directors.

Salem was appointed COO in January 2008, where he was responsible for the company’s day-to-day operations, global product development, sales and marketing. Prior to being named chief operating officer, Salem held a number of positions at Symantec, including senior vice president of the security products and solutions group, group president of the consumer business unit and group president of worldwide sales and marketing.

Salem will now be tasked with overseeing the company’s vast portfolio of security, storage and systems management solutions.
