For this evaluation of enterprise-class anti-spyware systems, eWEEK Labs tested three pure-play solutions. The products did what they set out to do, with varying degrees of effectiveness, but we found room for improvement in all.
We tested Sunbelt Software Inc.s CounterSpy Enterprise, Tenebril Inc.s SpyCatcher 3.0 Enterprise and Webroot Software Inc.s Spy Sweeper Enterprise 2.0. Each platform offers a tiered solution that includes a central policy server and database repository, as well as managed agents for Windows-based desktops. All the products use console applications rather than a Web interface; from a central console, each allows administrators to schedule spyware scans, automate cleaning actions and update signature definitions for hundreds or thousands of agents at once.
Stand-alone anti-spyware systems are worth a look, but we recommend that IT managers keep a close eye on the implementation of anti-spyware features in anti-virus platforms. eWEEK Labs will evaluate these integrated platforms in a forthcoming issue.
