Symantecs Hamlet to Play on the Endpoint

Symantec is pushed its latest answer to enterprise security into a crowded playing field on Sept. 27 with the release of Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 and Symantec Network Access Control 11.0.

Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0, code-named Hamlet, combines Symantec AntiVirus with advanced threat prevention in a single agent, managed through a single console. Slated to be available this month, Hamlet integrates a number of security technologies into a single agent at the endpoint with the goal of enabling customers to reduce costs and complexity.

It is NAC-ready, Symantec officials said, and the software is integrated into the same endpoint agent and management console—though users must buy a separate license to enable it.

Its launch comes soon after similar endpoint security products from Symantec rivals BigFix and McAfee.

“Nobody has this level of protection in one client,” said George Myers, director of product management at Symantec, in Cupertino, Calif.

Myers said that the need for this product is based on the changing threat landscape, and the fact that there are more zero-day and targeted stealth attacks on companies.

“Were seeing the need to augment the traditional security technologies of anti-virus and anti-spyware, which we all know are sort of reactionary technologies in the sense that they require signatures and therefore they require an attack to be known before we can write a signature and send it out to the rest of the global community,” he said.

Symantec officials also announced a free tool called the Symantec Endpoint Protection Integration Component, which is aimed at integrating Symantec Endpoint Protection with the Altiris management platform to help customers streamline rollouts and simplify migration from competitive products.

Symantec did not specify when the component would be available, stating only that it would be coming soon.

Current customers of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, Symantec Client Security, Symantec Sygate Enterprise Protection and Confidence Online for Corporate PCs (Whole Security) with valid maintenance contracts are eligible for a free upgrade to Endpoint Protection 11.0.

In addition, current customers of Symantec Network Access Control with valid maintenance contracts are eligible for a free upgrade to Symantec Network Access Control 11.0.
