Vendors Look to Bridge Security Gap

Two security companies, Preventsys Inc. and Intellitactics Inc., announced new technologies at the Information Security Decisions show here that bridge the gap that exists in many enterprises between teams that monitor security issues and operations staffs that are responsible for patching and maintaining systems on enterprise networks.

Preventsys, of Carlsbad, Calif., debuted its IT Operations software module for the Preventsys Enterprise Security Management system, which creates a common communication standard for IT operations and IT security teams, allowing the two groups to prioritize data from different security products on a network, such as vulnerability scanners and configuration management tools, company officials said.

Intellitactics, of Reston, Va., announced at the show a partnership with iDefense Inc. to combine its Intellitactics Security Manager automated threat management software with iDefenses iAlert security intelligence product. The partnership will give IT operations staffs an integrated view of threats and vulnerabilities.

The new products come as companies are struggling to stay on top of a steady stream of software vulnerabilities and data from vulnerability scanning tools, analysts say.

“Scanning reports might show you have thousands of vulnerabilities, but thats not very actionable information,” said Dan Burton, an analyst with Burton Group, in Midvale, Utah. “You have to be able to prioritize that information.”

Using Preventsys new IT Operations module, filters can be applied to security issues identified by an IT security staff. Issues can be prioritized according to their severity, business impact or business rules.

For users of Intellitactics Security Manager, data from iAlert will appear alongside data consolidated from security point products, desktops and other applications.

The integration provides context and actionable information for Security Managers alert management feature, which will allow users to respond more quickly to security incidents, Intellitactics officials said.
