In VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i, McAfee has beefed up its enterprise-grade, host-based anti-virus solution to proactively deal with worms and malware that may not yet be addressed with virus signatures.

Instead of bundling its anti-virus client with a desktop firewall, as Ive seen with Symantec Client Security 2.0, McAfee instead has integrated limited firewalling features into the anti-virus program itself.

I configured VirusScan to prevent mass-mailing worms by blocking outbound requests on Port 25. VirusScan offers a few built-in rules to address common worm vectors, or administrators can tailor their own rules as necessary.

I wasnt so wild about VirusScans File, Share and Folder protection feature. Although I appreciated the ability to control Internet Explorers or Outlook Express ability to launch applications, the share protection seems unnecessary and confusing because it can override permissions native to NT File System.

Version 8.0i offers buffer overflow protection in addition to defenses against spyware, dialers and keystroke loggers.

VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i, available now, is sold as part of McAfee Active VirusScan Suite, which also includes McAfee NetShield and McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator. The suite sells for $38.12 per desktop for as many as 100 users, or $29.54 per desktop for 1,000 users.
