Black Duck Software has announced the availability of the Black Duck Suite 6.
The latest release of the company’s enterprise-class management and governance platform for open-source software increases developer productivity and speeds time to results by up to 10 times, Black Duck officials said.
The Black Duck Suite 6 enables organizations with up to thousands of developers and terabytes of code to realize the benefits of free and open-source software (FOSS) use in development, while mitigating the challenges and complexity associated with using it at scale. Black Duck Software is a global provider of strategy, products and services for automating the management, governance and secure use of FOSS in a multi-source development process.
The Black Duck Suite 6 includes advancements such as rapid, automated discovery and identification of FOSS and other code without creating the risk of false negatives; a “learned matching” capability to capture and leverage the knowledge of internal experts; a developer-focused component request capability; and expansion of its industry-leading KnowledgeBase, making Suite 6 more capable, efficient and user-friendly.
“The Black Duck Suite 6 features greatly improve developer productivity and meet EXFO’s demanding enterprise needs for FOSS code identification, re-use and management,” said Steve DesRochers, senior director of research and development at EXFO, in a statement. “As the leading provider of test and service assurance solutions for network service providers and equipment manufacturers in the global telecommunications industry, we need a fast, accurate and easy-to-use development management platform, and Suite 6 delivers.”
Key features of the Black Duck Suite 6 include Rapid ID, a new advanced framework to automate the discovery and identification of FOSS and other code; new FOSS approval request automation; expansion of the Black Duck KnowledgeBase to 475,000 FOSS projects from over 5,000 sites, representing more than 100 billion lines of source code; and developer productivity improvements.
“We estimate that 75 percent of Global 2000 enterprises use open source at some point in the software development lifecycle today, yet a minority of these organizations have established, open-source governance policies and management tools in place,” said Mark Driver, vice president of research at Gartner, in a statement. “To establish a balance between risk and reward in using OSS, Gartner recommends that development organizations seek solutions to actively manage and control all open-source assets, whether developed in-house, directly acquired or embedded in commercial software and hardware products.”
“In the Suite 6, Black Duck has delivered an end-to-end management and governance platform designed for ease of use and faster time to results, enabling enterprise FOSS adoption and increased productivity,” said Bill McQuaide, executive vice president of products and strategy at Black Duck, in a statement. “The Black Duck Suite 6 provides the most complete, multi-faceted analysis techniques and raises the bar for performance with its new Rapid ID automation framework. The Black Duck Suite 6 stands alone in its ability to discover and identify FOSS and other re-used code across the development lifecycle.”
The Black Duck Suite 6 will be generally available in April 2011.
