There are plenty of books out there that help novices learn how to use and manage Linux. But what about people who need to administer Linux systems?

Well, despite its somewhat goofy cover art, the $49.99 “Linux Administration Handbook,” by Evi Nemeth, Garth Snyder and Trent Hein, covers all elements of enterprise Linux systems from the focus of an administrator. That eWEEK Labs found this to be extremely useful is no surprise. This is much of the same team that created the “Unix Administration Handbook” 14 years ago, a book that is still a must-read for budding Unix admins.

While the book does cover all the basics of Linux, it is not for complete novices; some familiarity and understanding of Linux are required.

The book covers all core aspects of managing Linux systems, from adding users to security to networking setup. Each chapter ends with a useful set of exercises that prompt the reader to put into action some of the things learned in that chapter.

Besides all the technical aspects of administering systems, the book also has quite a bit dedicated to the social and political aspects of being a system administrator in a modern business. This is information that any level of administrator would find useful.
