Red Hat Inc. on Friday released Update 1 for its Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 line of its open-source distribution. The new software improves performance and server platform support as well as beefier security the company said.

The update applied to all Enterprise Linux AS, Enterprise Linux ES, Enterprise Linux WS, Developer Suite and Cluster Suite products. All are sold on an annual subscription basis.

According to documents from the Raleigh, N.C.-based company, the update provides improved performance for AMD64 non-uniform memory access (NUMA) systems; and provides better platform support for IBM servers and Intel Itanium 2-based servers.

The update also provides a number of security and bug fixes; and drivers for a variety of system hardware devices such as audio cards. It also offers improved driver support for RAID storage systems from IBM and LSI Logic Corp. as well as availability of updated CD1, Extras and other ISO images via Red Hat Network.

More information on the specific changes to individual versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 are available at Red Hats Web site. The company said that Update 1 is available for download to all current Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscribers through the companys Red Hat Network.

Last fall, the company sparked controversy when it announced it would discontinue work on its personal Linux distributions, in favor of its enterprise-level products. Red Hat discontinued maintenance and errata support for Red Hat Linux 7.1 through 7.3 and 8.0 as of December 31, 2003. The company will discontinue maintenance support for Red Hat 9 as of April 30 2004.

Meanwhile, Red Hat recently reported strong financial results for its third fiscal quarter and announced that it would acquire Sistina Software Inc., a maker of storage infrastructure and virtualization software.
