Storage specialist BridgeStor announced it has signed an OEM agreement with Symantec to provide small and medium-size businesses with an Application Optimized Storage appliance equipped with Symantec’s Backup Exec 2010 deduplication suite.

Designed to bring data reduction technology to the SMB arena, the BridgeStor AOS appliance combines the functionality of a backup server with a deduplication appliance and a storage array in a 2U package. Featuring both client and server backup data deduplication, BridgeStor appliances are designed to reduce backup-to-disk capacity requirements, backup and recovery time, and network traffic. In addition, the company offers remote site consolidation and disaster recovery capabilities.

BridgeStor’s OEM agreement with Symantec allows BridgeStor to deliver a deduplicating backup appliance with hardware-accelerated inline data compression, a full backup media server software license and up to 16TB of backup-to-disk storage capacity. It also provides disaster recovery site replication, optional tape library connectivity and optional client-side deduplication for backing up remote locations. Additionally, Symantec will provide one year of 24/7 support on its Deduplication Suite to all BridgeStor AOS Backup Exec 2010 customers.

BridgeStor’s AOS Backup Exec 2010 Deduplicating Backup Appliance, with a starting price of $18,995 (which includes the preinstalled and preconfigured Symantec Backup Exec 2010 Deduplication Suite and one year of Symantec 24/7 service and support), is an all-in-one appliance that reduces backup data by as much as 90 percent, according to a company release. It delivers the equivalent of up to 144TB of virtual backup-to-disk capacity in just 2U of rack space containing up to 25 2.5-inch low-energy consumption disk drives.

The combination of Backup Exec and BridgeStor Virtual Storage-Advanced Data Reduction (VS-ADR) platform performs inline data deduplication, hardware-based compression, thin provisioning and encryption to help satisfy backup-to-disk storage requirements while reducing overall storage costs. “The addition of data deduplication to Backup Exec’s Deduplication Suite has transformed the economics of data protection. With our appliance-based approach to improving resource utilization and performance, BridgeStor is positioned to change the industry again,” said BridgeStor founder and CEO John Matze.

The company also offers AOS Appliances for VMware Virtualization, Backup Exec 2010, Microsoft DPM and Network Storage. AOS Appliances start at prices under $20,000 and are available through select channel partners. In addition, BridgeStor recently announced two AOS High Density products-the AOS High Density DPM Storage Appliance and the AOS High Density Network Storage Appliance, starting at $325 per terabyte.
