Panda Security announced GateDefender e250 and e500 unified threat management (UTM) devices. Both models offer speeds rated in terms of gigabits per second (Gbit/s) instead of megabits per second (Mbit/s).

The firewall throughput in the e250 has jumped from 800 Mbit/s to 5.1 Gbit/s. The throughput of the e500 has increased from 1,474 Mbit/s to 10 Gbit/s.

The updated models, which replace the previous e9100lite and e9100 versions, are designed to ensure continuous high-level protection. This is achieved with a combination of elements, including a deep packet inspection firewall, an application firewall, virtual private network (VPN), plus anti-spam, Web traffic and email filters in the Internet gateway, and a hotspot module.

“Over recent years, as media consumption has increased, we have noted the throughput required per user, especially in the mid-market business size, put a strain on existing specification UTMs,” Neil Martin, Panda’s marketing manager, told eWEEK. “The latest e250 and e500 GateDefender UTMs have enabled greater speeds by making use of an upgraded hardware chassis and the latest CPUs along with optimization of our detection technologies so IPS and proxies can all be enabled without impacting the traffic flow.”

The in-plane switching (IPS) throughput has also undergone an improvement, from 95 Mbit/s to 590 Mbit/s in e250, while in e500 the previous rate of 121 Mbit/s now reaches 600 Mbit/s.

The company also pre-configures the appliance to customers’ network requirements. Further fine-tuning can be done with the start-up wizard, so getting the appliance up and running from the time it is plugged in can be accomplished within 15 minutes, Martin said.

“There is a cloud-based management console, the admin interface is intuitive, [and] we apply a color-coded system using green, red, orange and blue for trusted, Internet, DMZ and wireless services to make it easy to work out where to apply security policies,” he said. “Other features include lists of all managed appliances, their operational status, remote upgrade services, plus remote access to each appliance.”

Earlier this month the company released a new version of Adaptive Defense 1.5, its managed service to protect against Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) and targeted attacks in enterprise environments.

Some of the key features of Adaptive Defense 1.5 include a disinfection service, real-time visibility of endpoints and the ability to manage settings from a single Web console. The service also can identify software on the network that has known vulnerabilities.
