EMC Corp. Tuesday will launch a new version of its Centera fixed-content storage device, sources close to the Hopkinton, Mass., company said.

Centera is an appliance, using object-based software, launched by EMC last year for data thats frequently written but rarely accessed. In addition to improved capacity and reliability, the new Centera 2.0 will have two versions designed specifically to help enterprises meet legal requirements on stored data, sources said.

EMC officials declined to comment. However, the base upgrade now has SNMP support, remote replication management, 250GB drives for up to 23TB capacity, a faster processor, and improved power supply redundancy, sources familiar with the product said. It also has more granular security settings and better management of deleted files. In the original version, deleted files sometimes left behind metadata, users and partner companies have said. Centera 2.0 also has a parity feature to ensure data integrity even if there is a drive failure, sources said.

The new models for legal requirements in the defense, financial, health care, and law enforcement fields are Compliance Edition and Compliance Edition Plus. The standard Compliance Edition has data deletion protection. The Plus version has that as well, but disables remote administration for security, the sources said.

Industry analyst Tony Prigmore, of Milford, Mass.-based Enterprise Storage Group Inc., said the Compliance Editions are impressive. “EMC has thought through this product and market solution, this market requirement, in an extraordinarily intelligent way,” he said.

The new versions pricing was not available. Similar products include NearStore, from Sunnyvale, Calif.s Network Appliance Inc., and BladeStore, from Louisville, Colo.s Storage Technology (StorageTek) Corp.
