EZQuests latest external Cobra hard drive boasts superb storage capacity, a high-speed FireWire interface and a compact form factor. My tests showed the Cobra+, which shipped in January, is an ideal portable storage system for adding large amounts of data archiving capability to any PC or Mac desktop.
EZQuest offers several Cobra+ drives with capacities ranging from 40GB to 200GB. The Cobra+ I tested, which lists for $419, had a 200GB ATA 100 hard disk running at 7,200 rpm to support high data transfer speeds. The system included two IEEE 1394 standard FireWire ports supporting data throughput rates of up to 400M bps. The unit also had an external power supply and a 2MB buffer.
I tested the Cobra+ on a Windows XP Professional desktop; the drive is also compatible with Windows 98SE, ME and 2000, as well as Mac OS 8.6 and later.
Once I connected the drive to my system using the provided six-pin FireWire cable, my desktop immediately recognized it. I was impressed by the speed of the drive, which transferred more than 7GB of data files in less than 5 minutes.
