Hewlett-Packard Co. this week at Storage Networking World Europe in Frankfurt, Germany, will unveil its new HP ProLiant DL100 G2 and HP ProLiant DL380 G4 Data Protection Storage Servers.

Due later this month and created through an OEM deal with Microsoft Corp., the new NAS (network-attached storage) appliances are built using technology from Microsofts DPM (Data Protection Manager) and Windows Storage Server 2003 products, said Thomas Kappel, business strategy and portfolio manager for HP StorageWorks Services at HP, in Palo Alto, Calif.

Fully configured out of the box for disk-based systems, the new HP ProLiant DL100 G2 and HP ProLiant DL380 G4 will help customers reduce the risk of data loss for Windows file servers through capabilities including hourly byte-level snapshots and simplified file recovery, said Kappel.

Vallerie Shelton, senior director of IT for Denver-based Kroenke Sports Enterprises LLC, has been using HPs ProLiant DPSS for two weeks. Shelton said having HP and Microsoft build a collaborative product ensures tight integration and technical support for the products.

“Our current legacy solution requires a server with Windows Server and a storage array. The amount of rack space required is reduced by half, and there is less software licensing to track,” Shelton said. “As a customer, I would also expect the pricing to be more attractive than purchasing each individual item.”

Shelton said the Microsoft DPM technologys support for snapshots, easy restores, retention of native file format and retention of source directory structure offers the capabilities her organization has been looking for.

HP also will introduce its new HP StorageWorks 6840 VLS (Virtual Library System) at SNW Europe. The newest member of HPs 6000 VLS family will be available at the end of the month. The 6840 VLS accelerates backup and recovery of servers in SAN (storage area network) deployments.

HPs new Electronic Vaulting Service, due next quarter, lets customers restore backed-up data from any of the 70 HP Recovery Centers around the world. The service provides customers off-site data protection and retention and multiple backup file versions, moves aged or less-used data from the electronic vault to tape, and consolidates numerous remote locations to a single data repository.
