I tested the 4TB (largest) version of the product, which is approximately 8 inches by 4.5 inches by 3.5 inches.

      3Field-Replaceable Drives

      3

For the first time, the ix2 drive units can be replaced in the field, although the entire unit must be turned off. Here you see me removing the screws to take out the drives.

I’ve removed both hard drives for a better look at the chassis. Note the two USB ports that enable the ix2-200 to be connected to other storage units and the RJ-45 network port. During my tests, the ix2-200 was connected via the network port.

      5Power Management

      5

New in the ix2-200, idle-drive spin down is an energy-saving feature.

      6Time Machine Settings

      6

Mac users will appreciate that the ix2-200 is Time Machine-ready and -discoverable via Bon Jour.

      7Enterprise Storage

      7

Here you see that I’ve configured the ix2-200 as an iSCSI target for use in the eWEEK Labs VMware vSphere 4 test infrastructure (lower right, “EMC iSCSI Disk”).
