Network Appliance has expanded the reach of its partnership portfolio, announcing separate deals with Symantec and Network Intelligence designed to provide NetApp with a stronger audience foothold within the data compliance and storage management realm.

Strengthening its commitment to offering customers greater heterogeneous SAN (storage area network) management capabilities to help control multi-vendor environments, on May 16 NetApp announced that it is re-branding Symantecs Veritas CommandCentral Storage into its own still-unnamed offering.

The co-branded product will be announced this fall, said officials of Symantec, based in Cupertino, Calif.

Under its expanded deal with Symantec, NetApp, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., will resell CommandCentral Storage as part of its own Manageability Software family.

Symantec has already built features into CommandCentral Storage with which to manage a variety of NetApp storage devices.

CommandCentral Storage monitors storage-related activity from the application to actual spindles in SAN, NAS (network-attached storage) and DAS (direct-attached storage) configurations, reporting back to IT administrators information such as exactly how much storage each department is using, and how many files are accessed and provided to an individual account within an organizations environment.

NetApp was also busy this week turning its attention toward the data collection arena. On May 18 the company announced that Network Intelligence has certified its EnVision appliance-based security technology to support NetApps SnapLock Compliance and SnapLock Enterprise offerings.

EnVision, which monitors data created by network devices and applications to spot any potential compliance impact or security breaches, will have the green light to plug into SnapLock to fortify its records retention, legal discovery, and non-rewriteable, non-erasable WORM volumes capabilities on NetApp storage systems.
