This years going down in database history as being notable for a few things: the open-sourcing of any database that blinked, and Oracle leaving tire marks on the road to PeopleSoft. Oracle won the battles Oracle, in its tireless pursuit to acquire PeopleSoft, grabbed an ungodly amount of attention this past year. Drawn-out court battles […]

Now that Oracle has made its midnight announcement, its possible to regain some perspective. In the end, the most important thing for Oracle customers is not necessarily that PeopleSoft shareholders voted with their shares, deciding by close of business day Friday that a majority wanted to see their company engage in a proxy battle with […]

Oracle Corp. sent yet another letter to PeopleSoft Inc.s board of directors on Monday morning, pointing out that a majority of PeopleSofts owners are prepared to sell at $24 per share and requesting once again that PeopleSoft drop its poison pill provision that blocks the deal. Oracle, of Redwood Shores, Calif., early Saturday morning declared […]

Beware, Oracle training and/or security expertise buyers. Ed Haskins—the purveyor of Oracle training materials that paying consumers complain often fail to appear in their mailboxes, the mastermind behind Oracle security pitches that he admits tout a completely fictional “expert,” and a man who admits that he owes customers and experts more than $30,000—is still at […]

Following recent news about an Oracle training provider who allegedly scammed his customers, Oracle training experts had unanimous advice for consumers: Be a smart shopper. “[Oracles] advice would be to be a smart shopper and to ask for confirmation of credentials and/or to begin by reviewing the list of Oracle authorized partners who are indeed […]

In switching to a schedule of quarterly patch rollup releases, Oracle Corp. is sparing grateful DBAs and customers from the constant patching of monthly releases, to which the company originally alluded three months ago. “We began talking about going to a regularly scheduled delivery model for patch delivery over the last year,” Oracle chief security […]

Both companies are offering prizes for the best software written for their open-source databases, although IBMs wee prizes—to be announced at ApacheCon 2004 US next […]

Yes, OK, OK, OK, its true. An Oracle lawyer did, in fact, tell the judge in the Delaware anti-poison-pill trial that Oracle would walk away from its 18-month-old, bitterly fought PeopleSoft bid if shareholders dont tender a majority of outstanding shares by Nov. 19. In a letter to the court, Michael Carroll said Oracle would […]

Oracle Database 10g be damned—IBM has been doing grid for longer than Oracle, better than Oracle and for cheaper than Oracle, its database executives want us to know. New features in the recently released DB2 Universal Database 8.2 deliver “a very simple way to set up a high-availability failover environment with a much more cost-effective […]

Sure, says IBMs database guru, Oracle is talking a good game on grid computing with Oracle Database 10g, but IBMs still pummeling its biggest database competitor in terms of price and in terms of how many nodes its technology has scaled to in production environments—try 1,000, compared with Oracle Corp.s 16. Database Editor Lisa Vaas […]
