Back from vacation and we’re seeing plenty of news in storage, despite the usual mid-summer business lull.
For example, Seagate chose Aug. 1 to open new accessibility for its 500GB GoFlex Satellite wireless storage device for tablets and smartphones. The first GoFlex, launched in May 2011 (photo included at this link), was aimed at iPads and iPhones, naturally.
Now owners of Android-powered devices can connect them to much more storage via a new dedicated wireless storage app–GoFlex Media App for Android–for movies, video, music and whatever else needs to be retained.
Because iPads, Galaxies, and most other tablet devices carry a limited amount of on-board storage (usually 16GB, 32GB or 64GB), having a nearby trove of 500GB can be a wonderful thing. For example, GoFlex users can stream HD (high-definition) videos and play them back in minutes.
Five hundred gigabytes can hold somewhere in the vicinity of 250 to 300 HD videos, Seagate said. The Satellite will stream content to a connected device from up to 150 feet away over 802.11 b/g/n and has a rechargeable battery. It’s as WiFi-like as your home network, or sitting down at Starbucks.
The GoFlex Media App became available free on Aug. 1 on Android Market and iTunes for iOS devices. The GoFlex Satellite is currently available worldwide for about $200.
