IBM on Friday rolled out a version of its embeddable Informix Express database for small and midsize businesses, building on its earlier pitch to SMBs with BladeCenter Express Bundles.

The Armonk, N.Y., company is introducing Informix Dynamic Server 10, an embeddable database designed to give growing room for the information management needs of application providers who serve SMBs.

“Application providers that serve small and medium-sized businesses are looking to gain a competitive edge by building an on-demand information infrastructure that helps their clients anticipate and respond to changing business requirements,” Bernie Spang, director of IBM Information Management, said in a release.

“Informix Express provides the foundation for these organizations to expand their information management capabilities, and it also allows them to free up skilled resources and focus on next-generation business applications,” Spang said.

Informix Express 10 offers automated installation and deployment, which makes for a silent and transparent install that, IBM claims, doesnt impact a customers existing infrastructure.

The database has autonomic self-maintenance, self-monitoring and self-configuration. It also offers support for open industry standards and portability across platforms that run Unix, Windows or Linux.

According to IBM, Informix is used by eight of the top 10 retailers in North America, along with 20 of the top 25 supermarkets. It also has a strong presence in the telecommunications, healthcare and government and SMB industries.

Informix Dynamic Server Express Version 10 is available now, with pricing for license and maintenance beginning at $124 per user.
