To keep up with customers proliferating SQL Server instances, Idera has added a repository engine to capture performance analysis data from multiple SQL Servers in the latest version of its performance monitoring and diagnostics tool.
Version 4.0 of Ideras SQL diagnostic manager aims to help database administrators keep up with SQL Server infrastructures that are expanding from tens to hundreds or even thousands of instances.
The updates Metric Repository captures and stores performance and availability metrics from SQL Server instances across an enterprise in a central repository.
The stored information can be used for trend analysis, capacity planning, data comparison, data correlation and forecasting.
New features also include best practice reporting, with pre-defined reports, sample reports and a guide to writing custom reports.

An enhanced Web console also now enables real-time remote monitoring of SQL Server 2005 instances from a Web browser.
Also, SQL diagnostic manager 4.0 is now able to dispatch alerts to enterprise management frameworks such as Tivoli, HP OpenView and CA UniCenter.
One customer testified as to the need to stay on top of SQL Server performance.
“At WellPoint [formerly WellChoice Inc. and Empire BlueCross BlueShield of New York], SQL Server functions as the back-end to many of our business critical applications, including our Web site, that helps us serve over 5 million customers just in New York,” Arun Modasra, WellPoints chief systems architect of Microsoft SQL Database Administration, was quoted as saying in a release.
“We cant tolerate performance or availability problems in our environment. The central Metrics Repository and the new reporting and analytics capabilities in SQL diagnostic manager really enhance our ability to plan strategically and manage our SQL Server infrastructure proactively. This enables us to identify and resolve potential problems before they happen.”
The update is available now, priced at $1,295 per SQL Server instance, including the Web console.
